Saddleback’s Friends of the Library celebrated the 40th anniversary of the organization April 27 at LRC, distributing free cupcakes while promoting the program.
Friends of the Library is a non-profit organization started in 1983 by former Saddleback College librarian Dr. Ann Hagerty. Friends of the Library promote the library as a cultural, educational, and research resource for students and the community by awarding scholarships, supporting student, faculty and author events, and helping fund various campus projects.
The staff of Friends of the Library consists of volunteers, led by organization president Vicki Good, along with Ana Maria Cobos, Daniel Ferger, and student Amir Bakhtiari. In addition, the group has a new partnership with Saddleback’s OASIS program’s Life Skills students, who assist weekly with various duties.
Among its’ many contributions to Saddleback, Friends of the Library recently gave more than $3100 in student scholarships and purchased iPads to assist students searching the catalog in the stacks through proceeds from the sale of donated books.
If you’d like to donate a book – hardcover and quality paper format only -- a donation box is available outside LRC 241 during LRC hours. If you’d like to buy a book to support Friends of the Library, all are priced at $2 and available in the LRC lobby on the honor system via cash or credit card.
