Each year, from September 15 to October 15, the United States acknowledges the cultures and contributions of both Hispanic and Latinx Americans to our nation through Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month. Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to come together to celebrate the vast influences that Hispanic and Latinx Americans have had on many aspects of American life. Whether you're a member of the Hispanic and Latinx community or you simply have an interest in exploring new cultures, you're invited to join us at one the many events we have planned for the month.

Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Celebration
Monday, September 16  from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Lawn Outside Bookstore and SSC

Join us for a fun afternoon of music, food, activities, and information. The C BAND will be performing Latin rhythms such as salsa, cumbia, Latin son, boleros, pop Latino, and more in celebration of the cultural richness of Latin America. The first 200 people will receive a free taco plate from Tacos and Co (while supplies last).

Paletas and Politics

Enjoy a paleta (Mexican frozen treat) and get registered to vote as a part of National Voter Registration Day.  

Piñata Making

Join us for a fun afternoon of dancing and socializing as we celebrate the music and dance of Hispanic and Latinx countries. We will also have a nacho bar and aguas frescas.

Latin Flag Day
Thursday, September 26 from 12 to 2 p.m.

Celebrate the flags of Hispanic/Latinx countries! We will have flag painting and coloring stations set up as well as having a flag scavenger hunt. Take home a flag and other small items and sample some Mexican candy.

ASG will be taking submissions for the Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month Art Competition. Didn’t have enough time to create something? We will have some supplies on hand for you to create your masterpiece to submit. 

Holistic Remedies Day

Join us for a dive into Latinx holistic practices. Sample teas and learn about other practices. 

Outdoor Movie Night: The Book of Life

Get ready for Dia de los Muertos by joining us for an outdoor movie showing of The Book of Life. We will have some chairs available, but you are free to bring your own blankets, chairs, and snacks.

Lotería, Taste of Culture, and Indigenous People’s Day

Play a game or two of Lotería, a Mexican game of chance similar to bingo,  and sample different snacks and treats from Latinx cultures. We will also celebrate and have information about Indigenous People’s Day.  

Éxito en STEM: Latinx Student Panel

In collaboration with MESA and the Office of College Equity, Inclusion, and Access, we are excited to present Éxito en STEM: Latinx Student Panel—an empowering event designed to inspire and uplift our Latinx student community in STEM at Saddleback College. Join us for this Latiné Heritage Month event where current STEM students will share best practices on studying, building connections, and balancing school and life. This is a great opportunity to connect, learn, and grow as a community. Food and refreshments will be provided!
 
Outdoor Movie: A Million Miles Away

Bring your family and friends and join ASG for a showing of A Million Miles Away. The movie is a  biopic about Jose Hernandez and his journey from working the fields of the San Joaquin Valley to fulfilling his life-long dream of being a NASA astronaut.

WORDFEST OC
Friday, October 18 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

WORDFEST OC is a Literary Festival featuring poetry readings, storytelling, spoken word performances, panel discussions, and writing workshops with activities for all ages. Several Latinx-themed events will be happening during the festival including Uplifting Histories: The Launching of the LATINX VOICES JOURNAL and A Conversation with Gustavo Arellano on His Life & Career.
