Student Concerns with Grades or Faculty:

By law, the instructor is solely responsible for grades assigned; no instructor may be directed to change a grade except in certain circumstances authorized by the California Education Code, Section 76224 (a).

When a student believes that the district grading policy has not been followed and/or a faculty member has made an error in grading, the student may seek an informal resolution. This must be done no later than 45 days after the student knew or should have known the grade in the course.

Process for an informal resolution

  • The student must first discuss his/her concern with the appropriate course instructor.
  • If no resolution has been met in this informal meeting, the student may opt to meet with the division dean. Prior to scheduling a meeting with Dr. Flanigan, the student must complete the Student Grade Concern form and attach to this form with any supporting information and documentation to substantiate the student's grade concern.
  • Once this written documentation has been submitted and received by Dr. Flanigan, a meeting with the student and Dr. Flanigan will be scheduled.
  • However, prior to any meeting with the student, Dr. Flanigan will give the faculty member a copy of the Student Grade Concern and supporting documentation and speak directly with the instructor about the concern.

Process for formal resolution

  • If the student is unable to resolve his/her grade concern on the informal level as outlined above, the student may elect to pursue a formal grade grievance pursuant Board Policy 5505. This must be done no later than 45 days after the student knew or should have known the grade in the course. To initiate the formal grade grievance process, complete the Statement of Grievance and submit it to Dr. Flanigan for processing.

When a student feels that he/she has a valid concern or complaint about a faculty member, all effort should be made by the student to resolve this concern or complaint directly with the faculty member on an informal level. However, should the student's concern be unresolved or involve sensitive discrimination issues, the student may opt to complete the Summary of Student Concern (Faculty) and submit this form to Dr. Flanigan.

  • Once this written documentation has been submitted and received by Dr. Flanigan, a meeting with the student and Dr. Flanigan will be scheduled.
  • However, prior to any meeting with the student, Dr. Flanigan will give the faculty member a copy of the Summary of Student Concern (Faculty) and supporting documentation and speak directly with the instructor about the concern.

Saddleback College does not discriminate on the basis of handicap, sex, race, color, or national or ethnic origin in administration of (1) educational policies, (2) personnel practices, and (3) college programs.
