Student Learning Outcomes Spring 2010

Geog 1:

1) Students will be able to analyze the controls, distribution, and classification of world climates.

Assessment: 75% of students who take the exam will correctly answer questions differentiating world climates.

2) Describe seasonal Earth-Sun relations and explain resulting physical phenomena on Earth's surface.

Assessment: 75% of students who take the exam will correctly answer questions pertaining to Earth-Sun relationships and differences in daylight and the seasons.

3) Describe the Theory of Plate Tectonics, provide scientific evidence in its support, and explain its correlation to the creation of landforms.

Assessment: 75% of students who take the exam will correctly answer questions asking about the different types of plate boundaries and the corresponding landforms that are created.

Geog 1L:

1) Analyze and interpret a weather map.

Assessment: 75% of students in a physical geography lab course will correctly interpret a weather map.

2) Utilize a topographic map.

Assessment: 75% of students will be able to use a maps scale to determine distance and identify elevation on a topographic map.

3) Identify faults and the corresponding stress that creates them.

Assessment: 75% of students who take the exam will be able to identify different faults and the stress that created them.

Geog 2:

1) Student in this course will be able to explain cultural diffusion and analyze the factors that influnece its rate and extent.

Assessement: 75% of students who take the exam will be able to accurately explain how a specific religion, language, or popular culture originated and spread via the cultural diffusion process.

2) Understand the relatiionship between the physical environment and the cultural environment.

Assessment: 75% of students who take the exam will be able to correctly answer questions pertaining to the physical envionment's role in the creation of different aspects of culture.

3) Students will be able to analyze the relationship between agriculture and urban patterns.

Assessment: 75% of students who take the exam will be able to correctly answer questions related to the evolution of agriculture, urban patterns, and their relationship.

Geog 3:

1) Demonstrate knowledge of current national and global issues for the world's regions.

Assessment: 75% of students who take the exam will be able to correctly answer questions on current/recent global issues for the world's regions.

2) Identify major landforms for the world's regions and discuss thier impacts on culture.

Assessment: 75% of students who take the exam will be able to correctly identify major landforms for the world's regions and discuss their impacts on culture.

3) Analyze the impact of climate on the distribution of world population patterns.

Assessment: 75% of students who take the exam will be able to correctly answer questions relating to the impact of climate on the distribution of world population patterns.

Geog 38

1) Describe the unique goegraphic characteristics of the physiographic regions within California.

Assessment: 75% of students who take the exam will correctly answer queestions on the unique geographic characteristics of the physiographic regions within California.

2) Explain the causes and distribution of California's numerous climatic zones.

Assessment: 75% of students who take the exam will correctly answer questions about the causes and distribuiton of California's numerous climatic zones.

3) Analyze the reasons for the great variety of economic activities in California.

Assessment: 75% of students who take the exam will correctly answer questions about the reasons for the great variety of economic activities in California.

Geog 102:

1) Students who compete this course will be able to demonstrate an understaning of geographic process (will vary based on destination) in field observatitons.

Assessment: 75% of students who complete the class will be able to answer questions on geographic process (will vary based on destination) from field observation.

GEOG 110:

1) Use basic GIS tools and create a map with correct cartographic elements.

Assessment: 75% of students who complete the course will be able to use basic GIS tools and create a map with correct cartographic elelments.

2) Locate, evaluate, and acquire geographical data from the Internet suitable for GIS analysis.

Assessment: 75% of students who complete the course will be able to identify and download geographical data and import it to GIS.

3) Demonstrate ability to apply appropriate GIS tools in the interpretation and analysis of geographical data.

Assessment: 75% of students who complete the course will be able to use basic GIS tools to interpret and analyze geographic data.

Geog 211:

1) Create a GIS database, perform complex spatial analysis, and present their findings using standard cartographic formats.

Assessment: 75% of students who compete the course will be able to apply advanded GIS tools to analyze spatial phenomena and create standard cartographic displays.

2) Create new geographical data.

Assessment: 75% of students who complete the course will be able to create new geographical data and import it into GIS.

3) Understand basic statistical spatial pattern analysis.

Assessement: 75% of students who complete the course will be able to identify, apply, and interpret the correct spatial statistics for pattern analysis.
