Grade Grievance:

By law, the instructor is solely responsible for grades assigned; no instructor may be directed to change a grade except in certain circumstances authorized by the California Education Code, Section 76224 (a).

Any student who believes he or she has a grade grievance must make a reasonable effort to resolve the matter on an informal basis prior to requesting a grievance hearing. The student should attempt to resolve the problem with the faculty member with whom the student has the grievance and/or that person's dean or designee.

If informal resolution to the grade dispute is not possible, the student may elect to pursue a formal grievance.

  • Any student who believes he or she has a grade grievance can file a written, signed
    Statement of Grievance
form stating the basis for the grade grievance with the appropriate dean or designee. This must be done no later than 45 days after the student knew or should have known of the grade in the course. The dean or designee shall provide a copy of the written Statement of Grievance form to the affected faculty member within 5 days after the form has been filed.

Note: The faculty member shall not engage in any conduct that may be construed as retaliation for filing the grievance. Filing a grievance is a protected activity.
