Saddleback, Irvine Valley Colleges to Compete in Annual Presidents’ Cup Basketball Competition

All Saddleback College employees and community members are invited to attend the Presidents’ Cup basketball tournament on Wednesday, January 30th at the Saddleback College gymnasium. The men’s game will begin at 5:30 p.m. and the women’s game will begin at 7:30 p.m., with a brief ceremony between the two games.  General admission is $10.00 and admission for students is $5.00.  This year, 100 percent of the proceeds will go toward the Tom Padberg Memorial Endowment Scholarship.

The Presidents’ Cup tournament is a friendly basketball competition between the Saddleback College Gauchos and the Irvine Valley College Lasers. The competition for the perpetual trophy plays out in a four-game series between the colleges’ men’s and women’s basketball teams. This is the fifth Presidents’ Cup Tournament. The Gauchos and Lasers split two close games in the first round of games, the Saddleback men won 54-49 and the Irvine Valley women won 59-56.

Dr. Tod A. Burnett, president of Saddleback College, stated, “I look forward to attending the Presidents’ Cup to watch the Gauchos face off against our sister college in what is sure to be an exciting night of basketball. The first two games were very competitive and the January 30th event is sure to be the same. This year, we are happy to raise money for a scholarship in honor of Tom Padberg, the late husband of the South Orange County Community College District Board of Trustees President Nancy Padberg. Tom was a huge sports fan and was always an enthusiastic and loyal fan of the Gauchos. He is greatly missed.”

“The Presidents’ Cup has become a great tradition for both Saddleback College and Irvine Valley College,” said Dr. Glenn R. Roquemore, president of Irvine Valley College. “The Gauchos and the Lasers both have excellent men’s and women’s basketball teams this year and I anticipate that all four games in the competition will be exciting.”
