Walk-a-thon Puts Kinesiology Program Back on Track [top]  Saturday, December 05, 2009

The Saddleback College and Irvine Valley College Adapted Kinesiology programs will host a “Back on Track” fundraising walk-a-thon at the Saddleback College stadium on Saturday, December 5th from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  Currently serving over 350 disabled and elderly students, the Adapted Kinesiology programs at Saddleback College and Irvine Valley College help those with severe and chronic disabilities such as spinal cord injury, brain injury, autism, stroke, and others.

Dr. Tod A. Burnett, President of Saddleback College, stated, “As we work through difficult financial times, it is inspirational to see the dedication of students, faculty, staff, management, and community work to preserve the invaluable services like those found in our college’s Adapted Kinesiology programs.  Events like the ‘Back on Track’ walk-a-thon are innovative ways to raise additional funds to continue offering vital programs that serve our students and community.”

The “Back on Track” walk-a-thon coordinators are hoping to bring in $20,000 through events sponsorships and pledges.  The future success of Adapted Kinesiology students depends on the availability of specialists, physical therapists, nurses, recreation therapists, and other allied health professionals that are capable of assessing, assisting, and working with a wide range of students with varied physical conditions. Funds raised at the “Back on Track” walk-a-thon will support specialized staff that is crucial to the existence of the program.

The colleges’ Adapted Kinesiology programs include water exercise, health and fitness, strength and conditioning, stretching, balance and coordination training, sports, and outdoor recreation activities.  The programs bridge students from formal therapy to a return of function in their home and community while maintaining physical health, mobility, and quality of life.

For “Back on Track” participation or sponsorships information, please call Saddleback College Adapted Physical Education Professors Ron Hastings at (949) 582-4679 or Mike Bennett at (949) 582-4761. Learn more about Saddleback College’s Adapted Kinesiology programs by visiting http://www.saddleback.edu/dsps/pe/ .
