MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

OF SADDLEBACK COLLEGE

Welcome to Saddleback College’s 37th annual scholarship awards ceremony. The students receiving scholarships and awards today stand out for their academic achievements, service to our college and community, leadership, and talent. I am thrilled that they are being recognized and rewarded by our college community for their accomplishments.

Saddleback College’s scholarship ceremony is an annual tradition that has provided nearly $4 million in scholarships and awards to deserving students over the past 37 years. Our first ceremony in 1976 included 45 donors contributing just over $12,000 to some 60 students. We’ve come a long way: This year, scholarship funds to Saddleback College students total more than $498,000 and have been made available to over 300 deserving students.

On behalf of Saddleback College and our students, thank you to the more than 220 scholarship donors whose generous support make the difference in a promising student’s ability to realize his or her college education and goals. Donations come from businesses and organizations as well as individuals in the college community. About $125,000 of these scholarship funds are from a grant secured by Saddleback College Grants office and Division of Math, Science and Engineering, from the National Science Foundation.  We appreciate the efforts of the Saddleback College Foundation Board of Governors for their leadership in encouraging our local community to support the students at Saddleback College. Our faculty, staff and management – as well as our students – have also made significant contributions to this year’s scholarship campaign.

In addition, thank you to the members of the volunteer scholarship recommendation committee members who spent many hours reviewing the student scholarship applications and making the difficult decisions on who would be this year’s winners. Saddleback College has so many deserving students and this was indeed a difficult task. I also thank South Orange County Community College District Chancellor Gary Poertner and our Board of Trustees for their continued support and commitment to the success of our students.

Once again, thank you to the donors for making this day possible. Your continued support of Saddleback College’s scholarship program is truly appreciated and your support of our students is a sound investment in the future welfare of our community, state, and nation.

Sincerely,

Tod A. Burnett, Ed.D.
