PELL Grant Maximums

Beginning July 2012, the federal government has reduced the life-time eligibility for the federal PELL Grant to a maximum of 12 semesters. Example: After you receive a PELL Grant for six years of full-time study, 12 or more units each semester, you will no longer be allowed to receive the PELL Grant. If you attend less than 12 units, your PELL Grant eligibility will be prorated. Information on how much PELL eligibility you have left will be available on the National Student Loan Database beginning in mid-July.

High School Requirement for Federal Aid:

Pell Grants and Federal Student Loans Students who first enroll in a program of study on or after July 1, 2012, will not be eligible for federal financial aid if they do not have a high school diploma or a recognized equivalent (e.g., GED - General Education Diploma) or do not meet the State's home school requirements.

Federal Student Loans

For Direct Student Loans with disbursements made on or after July 1, 2012, and before July 1, 2014, interest will immediately begin to accrue as soon as the student is no longer enrolled in at least half-time status (6 or more units). The federal government will not pay the interest during the six-month grace period. Beginning July 1, 2012, the interest will be the responsibility of the student.
