What is Microsoft Live@edu?
Live@edu is a new e-mail system for students of Saddleback and
Irvine Valley College. It is a partnership between the South Orange Community
College District and Microsoft, using Microsoft’s Windows Live. Live@edu
replaces our current student email system, Netscape Messenger Express.
What are the benefits to
students?
- Significantly increased e-mail storage.
- Office Workspace storage for shared project work.
- Online storage space on SkyDrive that allows access from any location
with Web connection.
- Calendar feature for personal, academic, and student use (record appointments,
share calendars, schedule meetings).
- Recognition and credibility of MySite. This is particularly valuable
in conducting official college business or communicating with professors
who may not recognize non-Saddleback and IVC addresses.
- Ability to synchronize contacts and calendars with Windows Mobile and
iPhone systems.
- Anti-Spam and virus protection.
What does this cost me?
Live@edu email is a free service to students.
Will my current college email address change?
No. You will keep the same email address. Mail sent to account@saddleback.edu
or account@ivc.edu will go to your new Live@edu email account. Your outgoing
mail and replies will also carry your address Saddleback or IVC email address.
Will my college email login change?
Yes. Students need to login to MySite, click on the password
link, and enter the required information.
How long will it take between the sign up and when I can start
using the account?
New accounts usually require about one hour for activation.
How do I access college email?
The easiest way is to login to MySite – then just click on the
email link. No further login is required. If you log-in to
MySite using your Student ID number and PIN, this will not
change.
What are the requirements for using Live@edu mail on the web?
In order to use the complete set of features, and get the best
possible experience from Live@edu, you need to use one of the recommended
web browsers - Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) or higher for Windows, Mozilla
Firefox 3.0.1 or higher for Windows or Mac, or Safari 3.1 or higher for
Mac OS X. Please note that even though these browsers are considered supported,
there are still a few options which are NOT accessible from browsers other
than Internet Explorer 7 or 8 - including accessing the Junk E-mail settings
in the Live@edu mail system. For more information on exactly what features
are available in which browser, see also Microsoft's list of Supported Browsers
and Operating Systems.
Do I have to use the college’s email system?
No. But if you choose not to use the college’s email system,
you still need to login to the college email to enter your forwarding address
(Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.) at least once. If you are an existing college
email user on May 22, 2010, your forwarding information moves automatically
to the new system.
However, we hope you'll consider using Live@edu mail. The new mail system
has some benefits that other services do not: (1) It identifies you as a
student of the South Orange County Community College District. This is sometimes
important, such as when communicating with course instructors who must be
sure you are the person you say you are when discussing your grades or other
protected information. (2) The collaboration features on Live@edu will facilitate
group projects for classes and student organizations, (3) the other features
are comparable or better than what other free mail services provide.
Will I still have access to my email in the old system?
Yes. For a short time the old Netscape email server will still
be in operation. You will be able to log into MySite and click on the old
email link. This will allow you to read email sent to your account prior
to the May 22nd cutover date. This email will be deleted in the near future.
How do I forward my existing mail to another email account?
Check back soon for detailed information.
Under the old system, I already forwarded my college email to another
mail service – do I have to do this for the new email system?
No. People whose email is forwarded in the current system will
be provisioned with their email forwarded to the same email address in the
new system.
Do I have to keep the same e-mail provider throughout my Saddleback
career?
No. You can change your forwarding at any time, using our Account
Management page. You can change to the college’s email system or to any other
service provider of your choice. Official college e-mail (registration, grades,
fee statements, etc.) will be sent to your saddleback.edu or ivc.edu account
and forwarded automatically to whichever address you have chosen.
How do I access SkyDrive, the included online storage?
You can access Sky Drive from any web browser. Go to skydrive.live.com and sign-in using your Saddleback or IVC mail Windows Live ID. (account@saddleback.edu
or account@ivc.edu) and password.
What kind of anti-spam protection does Live@edu mail offer?
Live@edu has its own spam filters and virus protections. Messages
sent to a college email address will be scanned and filtered automatically
by Microsoft’s servers. Detected viruses will be deleted, and suspected
spam will be placed in your Junk folder for you to review. It is important
to periodically check your Junk folder to avoid missing a real message mistakenly
marked as spam.
In addition to this, mail sent to account@saddleback.edu or account@ivc.edu
will also be scanned and filtered by the college’s central anti-spam system,
where you can use a pre-configured "basic" level of protection,
or you can personalize the system to better recognize what you do and don't
consider spam, and trap or reject messages accordingly.
What are the privacy and security policies?
The college’s policies and protections are still in effect. See
the District’s Email Policies page. In addition, you will be asked to agree
to Microsoft's privacy and security policies when you sign up for college
email.
Where do I change my college mail password?
At MySite. Click "Username", then "Change password".
For more information on password security and picking a strong password,
see the Passwords page.
Can I keep this account after I leave college?
Student email accounts are deactivated after a student is no
longer actively enrolled in a course at the South Orange County Community
College District.
Where do I go for technical help with
my college email?
