In order to fully meet the needs of our diverse student population the Division of Counseling Services & Special Programs offers a variety of courses to assist students in achieving their academic goals:
APSY 140 EDUCATIONAL AND VOCATIONAL PLANNING (3 Units)
Designed to assist students to clarify career and educational goals, and to develop an academic plan to reach those goals. Includes orientation to college.
APSY 141 ASSESSMENT OF PRIOR LEARNING (3 Units)
Designed to assist students planning to apply for life/career experience toward the certificate, A.A. Degree or transfer. Students will develop a portfolio of their life learning to be submitted for faculty evaluation.
APSY 150 HELPING RELATIONSHIP (3 Units)
A course in basic counseling skills designed for students who desire the knowledge and communication skills needed to help themselves or others make positive changes in their lives. This course provides an excellent "test-the-water" course for prospective counselors, psychologists, social workers, or other helping professionals.
APSY 151 HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS (3 Units)
This course integrates psychological theory with human experiences and presents a positive view of the human connections that make us whole. The course is valuable for future parents, counselors and others in helping professions.
APSY 160 CAREER AND VOCATIONAL EXPLORATION (3 Units)
Focuses on the process of vocational choice through study of occupational trends and specific occupations. Students work with information about themselves obtained from standardized tests and selected occupational information.
APSY 161A LEARNING AND STUDY TECHNIQUES (1.5 Units)
This course focuses on theoretical and practical learning strategies designed to improve performance in academic and professional settings.
APSY 161B LEARNING AND STUDY TECHNIQUES (1.5 Units)
Reviews and expands learning and study techniques. Emphasizes test tasking strategies and test preparation related to objective and subjective tests. Includes pratical strategies designed to improve test performance and reduce test anxiety.
APSY 164 ADVANCED LEARNING, STUDY, AND TESTING TECHNIQUES (1.5 Unit)
Designed as an introduction and orientation to college with an emphasis on academic planning. Activities are centered on self-assessment, in- cluding tests and inventories, for those who are uncommitted to a major or goal.
APSY 162 ASSERTION: A BEHAVIORAL MODEL (1 OR 2 Units)
The therapeutic technique of assertion training is explored as a systematic function in the process of changing overt behavior. This technique is taught as a function to be applied to related fields of study within the helping professions and as a tool for personal insight.
APSY 166 THEORETICAL AND APPLIED LEADERSHIP (1 Unit)
Students will learn and apply basic theoretical and practical applications of leadership focused on current issues such as governance, organization structure. Includes decision making, team building, conflict resolution, ethics.
APSY 365 TESTING: APTITUDE, PERSONALITY INTEREST AND VALUES (1 Unit)
Employs a variety of instruments to assess students' interests, aptitudes, values and personality. Students apply results to career choice, an academic major, and/or personal growth.
