11/7: Gauchos Wrap Up Regular Season
The Gauchos finished fourth at the 36-hole Orange Empire Conference finals to conclude the regular season schedule. Freshman Sam Burns shot a season-best 85 at the Los Serranos golf course on Monday to lead the Gauchos to a team score of 383. It was the third-lowest score of the tournament that day. Tanya Tran added a 90 for the Gauchos.
The team returned on Wednesday for another 18 holes. Tran carded a 92 while Mandeep Dhillon added a 98 as Saddleback posted a 391 to remain in fourth place.
"Samantha is showing that she will be a very strong golfer next season," Saddleback coach Gary Sabella said. "And Tanya proved that she was one of the top golfers in the conference. Our team was young and inexperienced this season. All of our members were freshmen and will be much improved next season."
Tran earned all-conference honors as one of the top 10 golfers in the conference. She qualified to compete in the Southern California regional tournament November 10 and 11 at Desert Dunes in Palm Springs.
10/13:Tran Finishes Third at Riverview
Saddleback's Tanya Tran finished third in a field of 29 golfers at the Orange Empire Conference match hosted by Santa Ana College on the Riverview golf course. Tran carded an 81 to help the Gauchos to a 375 team score and fourth place. Irvine Valley had two golfers edge out Tran with scores of 79 and 80, helping the Lasers win the match with a 333 team score. Host Santa Ana finished third at 351.
10/6: Gauchos Finish 4th at Oak Creek
Tanya Tran carded a 90 and Kathy Koos added a 96 as the Gauchos fired a team score of 394 to place fourth in an Orange Empire Conference match hosted by Irvine Valley at the Oak Creek golf course. IVC won the match with a team score of 323.
10/1: Warm Temps Raise Golfers' Scores
On a hot and humid day at Los Serranos the Gauchos scores kept pace with the thermostat and Saddleback settled for fourth place in the five-team event. Tanya Tran led the Gauchos with a 94 and Mandeep Dhillon carded a 99 as the only Gauchos in double-digits.
9/29: Gaucho Pair Show Ability
Sarah Vedder shot an 80 and Tanya Tran carded an 81 to help the Gauchos post a team score of 348 in a conference match on the El Prado golf course. The Gauchos finished fourth in the team scoring, getting edged out by host Santa Ana (342) for third place. Vedder and Tran's scores ranked fifth and sixth overall, respectively, out of 28 golfers.
"Sarah and Tanya are beginning to score like they are capable of scoring and can become two of the better players in the conference," head coach Gary Sabella said.
9/24: Gauchos Host Conference Match
Saddleback hosted its first conference match of the season on the tough Tijeras Creek course and ended up shooting a team score of 366 to place fourth. Mikka Chen carded an 86 with Tanya Tran finishing with an 88 and Sarah Vedder turning in a 91.
9/22: Gauchos Place Fourth at Riverview
The Gauchos placed fourth at a conference match hosted by Santa Ana College on the Riverview golf course as Mikka Chen shot an 88 and Sam Burns carded an 89. Mandeep Dhillon added a 90 and Tanya Tran rounded out the scoring with a 92.
9/5: Saddleback Places 11th at Desert Event
Saddleback placed 11th during a two-day tournament hosted by College of the Desert at the Indian Canyons golf course in Palm Springs. Tanya Tran led the team with rounds of 82 and 86 while Mikka Chen shot rounds of 89 and 90 and Sarah Vedder added rounds of 95 and 90.
9/1: GAUCHOS OPEN 2008 SEASON
The Saddleback women's golf team opened the 2008 season at the Oak Creek golf course in a conference match hosted by Irvine Valley College.
Freshman Sarah Vedder led the Gauchos with an 87, despite having to pencil in a 10 on the first hole. She settled in after that hole to help the Gauchos post a team score of 362 to finish ahead of Santa Ana (372) and Fullerton (481). Irvine Valley won the conference opener on its home course with a 335 while Santiago Canyon was second at 341.
Mikka Chen added a 90 for the Gauchos while Mandeep Dhillon carded a 92 and Tanya Tran finished with a 93.
"It was kind of what I expected for the first match," new coach Gary Sabella said. "Each lady knows she is capable of shooting better scores and we'll get there soon enough. It was a good start to the season, the team has seen the competition, and we finished in the middle of the pack."
Saddleback will play at the Riverview golf course on Monday, Sept. 22, in the next conference match.
