11/9/12: Lasers brighter than Gauchos in final home match
 Saddleback's final home match of the 2012 season ended quickly with visiting Irvine Valley posting a three-set sweep over the Gauchos, 25-18, 25-22, 25-14.
The two teams were knotted up at 14 apiece in the first set before Irvine Valley captured 11 of the next 15 points to win, 25-18. Saddleback also fought hard in the second set, trailing 20-17 but refusing to give up. The Gauchos pulled within two points at 22-20 and then again at 24-22 before Irvine Valley was able to win set point.
The third set didn't go so well for the Gauchos as IVC's Avae Masaniai finally got her timing down and pounded kill after kill on the way to an 11-1 lead. Saddleback was trailing 18-4 before starting to pick up the fight. The Gauchos got three consecutive sideouts while the Lasers were serving at cut the deficit to 20-10 but the early hole was too much to overcome and Irvine Valley posted a 25-14 win to sweep the match.
Jourdan Kadow (pictured) posted 10 kills for the Gauchos while Mikayla Buck added nine kills. Hannah Hildebrand and Kara Gray each had six defensive digs.
Saddleback will wrap up the 2012 season on Wednesday, November 14, when the Gauchos travel to Santa Ana College to face the Lady Dons in a 7:00 p.m. match.
10/31/12: Volleyball stung by Hornets on Halloween
 There were few tricks and no treats for the Saddleback women's volleyball team on Halloween night as the Gauchos were scared off by the visiting Fullerton Hornets in three straight sets (25-17, 25-14, 25-20).
Fullerton jumped out quickly in the first two sets to cruise to comfortable victories but the Gauchos fought back hard in the third set, tying the score at 15 and then again at 18. Saddleback held a slight lead at 19-18 before a couple of defensive letdowns allowed the Hornets to win seven of the final eight points, ending the match in just 75 minutes.
Saddleback falls to 2-8 in conference play and 4-15 on the season. The Gauchos will travel to Golden West on Friday for a 6:00 p.m. match.
10/24/12: Gauchos drop marathon match to Chargers
Saddleback's six-set winning streak came to an end on Wednesday as the Gauchos fell to visiting Cypress College, 3-2, in a five-set marathon match. It was one that slipped through the Gauchos' fingers as they could not put the match away, falling 25-18, 22-25, 20-25, 27-25, 16-14.
The Gauchos, which had swept through both Riverside City College and Santa Ana College in their last two home matches, hoped to make it another three against Cypress. But the Chargers, who entered the state's Top 25 list this week, ended that streak early by taking the first set 25-18.
Saddleback trailed 16-10 in the second set before going on a 9-0 run and then maintained that three-point lead for the rest of the set in winning, 25-22.
The Gauchos rode that success through the third set, jumping out to a 13-8 lead, improving that margin to 19-13, and finishing off the Chargers for a 25-20 win. It looked like the Gauchos would end the match in the fourth set, holding a 19-16 lead. But the Chargers tied the score at 22's. The teams exchanged the next six points to remain tied at 25's before Cypress took advantage of an errant Saddleback pass to post a 27-25 win.
Saddleback refused to go down quietly on its home court as Jourdan Kadow (pictured) opened the deciding set with a pair of service aces to jump out to a 3-1 lead. Cypress bounced back for five straight points and a 6-3 advantage. The Chargers improved that advantage to 9-5 by the time the teams changed sides, but Saddleback started to pick away at that lead and tied the the score at 14-14 before Cypress was able to put together two straight kills to win the match, 16-14.
Kadow finished with 18 kills for the Gauchos while Mikayla Buck added 10 kills. Kadow and April Robinson each had four service aces with Robinson also posting four solo blocks. Kadow tallied 16 defensive digs while Karina Rejtharek added 12 digs and Kara Gray chipping in with 11 digs.
Saddleback will be at Orange Coast on Friday for a 7:00 p.m. match before returning home on Wednesday, October 31, for a 6:00 p.m. match against Fullerton.
10/19/12: Women’s volleyball sweeps past Santa Ana
 The Saddleback women’s volleyball has been playing better in recent weeks, and picked up its second three-game sweep in the past three matches with a win on Friday. The Gauchos dominated play with Santa Ana, defeating the Dons 3-0.
Saddleback found some life two weeks back when falling to highly-powered Golden West College. The figured out that they can play with some of the better teams in the conference and it seems to have instilled some confidence in the young club that has just one sophomore on the entire roster.
Saddleback made quick work of Santa Ana on Friday, beating the Dons in three straight games with an overpowering 25-18, 25-18, 25-19 win to improve to 2-5 in Orange Empire Conference play. Mikayla Buck posted seven kills and added three service aces while Hannah Blaydes added three solo blocks in the win.
Saddleback will play again on Wednesday when they host Cypress College at 6:00 pm in the Saddleback Gymnasium. The Gauchos lost to the Chargers 3-0 back on September 18 in their only meeting of the year.
10/12/12: Volleyball gets a victory sweep over Riverside
 Saddleback posted its first conference victory of the season with a three-set sweep over visiting Riverside on Friday night, 25-23, 25-21, 25-18.
The Gauchos (3-11, 1-4 in OEC) saw a 12-7 lead in the first set vanish as Riverside reeled off six straight points, but Saddleback tied the set up at 17-17. The set was tied 20-20 before Saddleback got the edge to win 25-23.
The second set was similarly equal, with the score tied at 15-15. Saddleback posted four quick points to pull out to a 19-15 lead but Riverside countered with the next three to make it 19-18. The Tigers couldn’t even the score and fell 25-21 in the second set. Saddleback controlled the third set from start to finish, building an 18-11 lead and holding that margin through the end of the match, 25-18.
Mikayla Buck (pictured) led the Gauchos with 10 kills and April Robinson added three solo blocks. Saddleback’s defense was led by Mackenzie Kaus with 14 digs while Karina Rejtharek added 13 digs.
10/11/12: Gauchos hang tough before falling to Golden West
 The Saddleback women’s volleyball team played solid all night long before falling to Golden West, one of the top programs in the state. The Gauchos lost to the Rustlers 3-1, but had their chances.
Saddleback has one of the youngest teams in the state so a meeting with a high octane program like Golden West was supposed to be nothing more than a formality. The Gauchos had other plans, however, as they pressed the No. 8 ranked team in the state to four sets.
Saddleback dropped the first set 25-10 and looked overmatched throughout. The second set started much the same way, as Golden West darted out to a 14-6 lead. The Gauchos then went on an impressive 10-2 run in the second set to tie the score at 16-16, and would eventually hang on for a 25-23 win to tie the score at 1-1. Set three was also very close and the Gauchos had a chance to steal it when they opened up an 18-15 lead late in the set. Golden West wouldn’t be denied; winning the next seven points in holding of Saddleback for a 25-22 win. Saddleback would once again bounce back to take an early 4-1 lead in set four before running out of gas as Golden West cruised to a 25-16 win to close out the match.
Saddleback fell to 2-11 on the season and 0-4 in Orange Empire Conference play with the loss. The Gauchos will play again at home on Friday against Riverside College. Match time is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
10/02/12: Saddleback drops first two conference matches
 Saddleback opened the Orange Empire Conference schedule with a pair of setbacks, falling to Cypress College in three sets (25-17, 25-20, 25-18) in Cypress on Friday before returning home to host the state's No. 2 team in Orange Coast College on Wednesday night. Although each set was close, the Pirates had one or two less errors in each set to post a 25-21, 25-22, 25-23 victory.
Saddleback saw Mikayla Buck post 12 kills while Karina Rejtharek had 17 assists and Hannah Hildebrand added 11 assists along with three service aces. Freshman libero Mackenzie Kaus (pictured) was credited with 10 defensive digs.
Saddleback travels to Fullerton College on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. and then returns home for two matches next week, hosting Golden West College on Wednesday (Oct. 10) and Riverside City College on Friday (Oct. 12). Both matches will begin at 6:00 p.m.
8/29/12: Gauchos pecked by Owls in season-opener
 The Saddleback women's volleyball team suffered a disappointing 5-game loss to visiting Citrus College in the 2012 season-opener for both schools. Despite winning the first two games by convincing 25-18 and 25-19 scores, the Gauchos left the door open a crack and Citrus fought its way back into the match, taking the third and fourth games by 25-20 and 26-24 scores, respectively. That forced a fifth and deciding game which see-sawed back and forth and remained tied at 12-12. But Saddleback had a pair of costly errors and Citrus took the deciding game, 15-12.
Jourdan Kadow was credited with 13 kills for the Gauchos while Mikayla Buck added 12 kills and Hannah Blaydes posted 10 kills. Karina Rejtharek was credited with 24 set assists while Hannah Hildebrand added 20 assists. Libero Mackenzie Kaus and Kadow each recorded 12 digs to lead the Saddleback defense with Hildebrand recording 10 digs.
Saddleback will travel south to Chula Vista on Friday (Aug. 31) to face Southwestern College at 5:00 p.m.
