9/07/12: Former Gauchos land coaching positions
Two former Saddleback tennis players have taken over as the head men's tennis coaches at a pair of four-year universities recently and are preparing their teams for the upcoming spring season.
Scott Hansen was the Saddleback men's tennis team MVP during the 1991 season when the Gauchos rolled to a 20-1 overall record which included the Orange Empire Conference title (12-0), the Southern California regional title, and both the state dual team title as well as the state tournament championship. Hansen later took over as the men's tennis coach at Saddleback from Bill Otta, going 65-15 in four seasons at the helm including four undefeated Orange Empire Conference titles. He was hired this summer to take over the men's tennis program at the University of Hawaii in Hilo, an NCAA Division II program. He has been living in Hawaii since leaving his position at Saddleback following the 2004 season.
Tim Downey was Saddleback's MVP during the 1980 season when the Gauchos posted a 20-2 overall record while going undefeated (12-0) in the old Mission Conference. He took over as head coach of the Saddleback men's tennis team immediately following Hansen, guiding the Gauchos during the 2005 and 2006 seasons. Downey was 20-13 in two seasons with the Gauchos. He was hired last spring to take over the men's tennis program at UC Riverside. The Highlanders compete at the NCAA Division I level in the Big West Conference.
5/5/12: Modry advances to SoCal semis
Saddleback men’s tennis player Ales Modry (pictured) advances to the semifinals of the Southern California individual play on Friday after defeating one of the top seeds in the tournament. He will face the No. 6 seed in the semifinals on Saturday morning.
Modry entered the tournament as the No. 12 seed in the tournament, but knocked off No. 2 seed Mensford Awusu from Mt. San Jacinto College on Friday. Modry led 5-1 in the opening set when Awusu retired due to an injury.
The Gaucho freshman from Santa Margarita will now play Miles Seeman from Santa Barbara City College in the semifinals on Saturday morning at 8:00 AM. Seeman also won a shortened match 3-0 when his opponent Josh Banks retired from the match. Banks was the No. 3 seed in individual play entering the tournament.
The individual tournament is being played at Irvine Valley College.
In other action, the doubles team of Sina Sharifi and Pedro Campos reached the quarterfinal round by knocking off #8-seeded Trevor Campbell and Grayson Frazier of Glendale in a third-set tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6 in tiebreaker). Sharifi and Campos, who were seeded ninth, were then defeated in the doubles quarterfinals on Friday, 6-1, 6-3, by Parker Kelley and Josh Banks, the top-seeded team from College of the Desert.
Quarterfinalists from the Southern California regional tournament advance to the state tournament next weekend in San Diego. Modry will represent the Gauchos in singles while Sharifi and Campos will compete in doubles.
4/18/12: Men’s tennis falls in playoff opener
The Saddleback men’s tennis had its best season in eight years but came up just short in its first appearance in the playoffs since 2004 when it lost to Los Angeles Pierce College, 5-4, on Tuesday afternoon in Woodland Hills. The Gauchos and Brahmas were tied 3-3 after singles play before Pierce won a nail-biter to advance in the Southern California playoffs.
Saddleback was in a good position after singles play, as their doubles play has been spectacular throughout the season. However, Pierce had too much on their own courts on Tuesday and held off the Gauchos in a close battle to the finish. After Saddleback won a close battle at No. 1 doubles, the Brahmas won both of the next two matches, with the No. 3 doubles match going down to the wire in both sets.
Pedro Campos (pictured) was the only Gaucho to win two matches on the day, easily defeating Patrick Massey 6-0, 6-2 in singles play before teaming with Sina Sharifi for a win at No. 1 doubles.
Saddleback finishes the regular season at 15-6 overall. It was the most wins for the program since winning 15 times in 2004.

4/16/12: Men’s tennis to open playoffs at Los Angeles Pierce
The men’s tennis team is in the playoffs for the first time since 2004 after capturing the Orange Empire Conference championship. The Gauchos earned the No. 5 seed and will travel to No. 4 Los Angeles Pierce College on Tuesday.
Saddleback finished the regular season 15-5 overall and 9-1 in OEC play, winning 10 of its last 11 matches. The Gauchos will face a Pierce team they lost to, 6-3, on February 21. In that match, Saddleback played with a number of injuries before falling to the Brahmas.
“It is a whole new season now,” head coach Bud Davis said. “Our guys have grown a lot since then and will be ready to give it their best shot.”
Match time is set for 2:00 PM.
4/10/12: Men's Tennis wraps up OEC play with win over Hornets
The Saddleback men's tennis team wrapped up the 2012 conference schedule with a 7-2 victory over Fullerton on the Hornets home courts on Tuesday, concluding the regular season with a 15-5 overall mark and a 9-1 conference record as the team captured its first conference title since 2004.
Sina Sharifi dropped a tough, 3-set match at No. 1 singles but the Gauchos swept the other five singles matches to wrap up the match before heading into doubles play. Ales Modry (pictured) posted a 6-0, 6-0 sweep over his opponent at No. 2 singles and Chris Bloom blanked his opponent at No. 5 singles to pace the Saddleback singles attack. Jake Barnard and Modry then teamed up at No. 3 doubles to blank their opponents, 8-0.
The Gauchos will wait until the weekend to hear from the seeding committee as to where they will be seeded in the regional playoffs. First-round regional action begins on Tuesday, April 17, at the home of the higher seed.
Saddleback head coach Bud Davis, now in his third season, went winless in conference play during his first year at the helm and then improved to 4-6 last season as the Gauchos placed fourth before capturing the conference title this year. Saddleback had won 12 straight conference titles from 1993 through 2004 and had captured 25 titles in a 26-year span from 1979 through 2004. The Gauchos' only misfire was a second place finish in 1992.

3/30/12: Gauchos capture first OEC tennis title since 2004
For the first time in eight years, the Saddleback men’s tennis program is the champions of the Orange Empire Conference after a grueling 5-4 win over Riverside City College on Thursday at Riverside. The Gauchos fell behind 3-1 before mounting a charge and showing its depth, earning its first OEC title since 2004.
Saddleback started slowly but received help from the No. 5 and No. 6 singles players as both Donnie Howren and Gage Gallagher scored easy wins in singles play to even the team match at 3-3 headed into doubles play. The Gauchos then won 2-of-3 hard-fought doubles matches, with Howren (left) once again leading the charge in joining with Chris Bloom for an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles. Jake Barnard and Ales Modry then bounced back from losses at singles to win at No. 3 doubles, 8-6, and the celebration was on.
“It was a great win for our program,” head coach Bud Davis (right) said. “They were challenged, and rose to the occasion with a lot on the line. Their character was tested, and they passed the test.”
Saddleback improved to 14-5 overall with the win and 8-1 in Orange Empire Conference play. The Gauchos are still just one game in front of Riverside, but have now defeated the Tigers twice with only one match remaining on the conference schedule. Saddleback will finish OEC play with a match at Fullerton College next Tuesday. The Gauchos defeated Fullerton 8-1 on March 13 in their only meeting of the season.
It was the first Orange Empire Conference title for the men’s program since winning the title in 2004. Previous to 2005, Saddleback had captured 17-of-18 OEC titles from 1987 to 2004. Over the past seven years, the Gauchos had only finished higher than fourth place one time, finishing second in 2005. In addition, the 14th win of the season on Thursday is the most since winning 15 in 2004.

3/23/12: Men’s tennis routs Cypress to remain on top
The Saddleback men’s tennis team remains on top in the Orange Empire Conference standings after a convincing 9-0 win over Cypress College on Thursday afternoon at the Saddleback courts. The Gauchos made quick work of the Chargers, with tough matches coming next week against Irvine Valley and Riverside.
Saddleback didn’t waste too much time in making a statement on Thursday, winning all six singles matches very comfortably. The Gauchos won 72-of-85 games in clinching the team match before ever reaching the doubles round. No. 2 singles player Sina Sharifi (left) and No. 6 singles player Donnie Howren (right) were the most impressive, shutting out their respective opponents 6-0, 6-0. Sharifi later teamed with Pedro Campos for an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles while Howren took the rest of the afternoon off.
Saddleback’s win on Thursday kept the Gauchos one game in front of Riverside City College and three games in front of third place Irvine Valley College in the OEC standings. The Gauchos host IVC next Tuesday before traveling to Riverside for a showdown with Tigers next Thursday.

The men’s tennis team won its seventh straight match on Tuesday, but was tested by a solid Orange Coast College team in the process. The Gauchos won all three doubles matches in beating the Pirates 6-3, holding on to the lead in the Orange Empire Conference.
Saddleback and Orange Coast split six singles matches, sending the team match into doubles play with the conference lead on the line. The Gauchos responded, as every doubles team made quick work of the Pirates, winning 24-of-31 games in turning back OCC.
Saddleback once again showed its depth as No. 3 singles player Pedro Campos, No. 4 singles player Jake Barnard and No. 5 singles player Donnie Howren all were two-time winners on the day. Most impressive may have been Campos (pictured), who breezed by Derek Wong in singles play (6-0, 6-4) before teaming with Sina Sharifi for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles.

Gauchos dominate Hornets to remain in first place
The Saddleback men’s tennis team made quick work of Fullerton College, 8-1, on Tuesday afternoon on the home courts at Saddleback. With the win, the Gauchos remain one game in front of Riverside City College in the Orange Empire Conference standings with five matches remaining.
Saddleback fell behind after dropping a close three-set match at No. 1 singles, but comfortably cruised to a win from that point forward in beating Fullerton on Tuesday. The Gauchos dropped just six games the rest of the way in singles, beating the Hornets in 60-of-66 games. Doubles play had the same feel as Saddleback easily won all three matches in improving to 10-4 overall on the season and 5-0 in OEC play.
Jake Barnard (left) and Chris Bloom (right) both scored shutout wins in singles play, downing their respective opponents 6-0, 6-0 before Barnard teamed with Ales Modry and Bloom teamed with Donnie Howren to both score 8-1 wins in doubles.

The men’s tennis team faced off on Thursday against Riverside City College, with the winner taking over first place in the Orange Empire Conference. The Gauchos rallied from down 4-2 after singles play to defeat the Tigers, 5-4, winning all three doubles matches.
Saddleback looked like they were going to suffer their first lost in conference play, losing the first four singles matches in falling behind 4-0. The Gauchos rallied to win five straight matches, with No. 5 singles player Donnie Howren (left) and No. 6 singles player Chris Bloom (right) both winning at singles before teaming up to win at No. 2 doubles.
Howren was impressive, blasting Tavyn Libao 6-0, 6-3, before teaming with Bloom for a comfortable 8-2 win in doubles play. In the decisive match of the day, Jake Barnard and Ales Modry both bounced back from three-set losses in singles to team up for a dominating 8-1 win in doubles play, vaulting the Gauchos into first place in the conference standings.

3/7/12: Men’s tennis takes care of business against IVC
The men’s tennis team is all business in recent weeks since the start of conference play, and once again showed on Tuesday that they will contend for an Orange Empire Conference crown in 2012. Saddleback cruised past inter-district rival Irvine Valley College, 7-2, improving to 3-0 in conference play.
The Gauchos had too much for the Lasers in singles, scoring five straight wins at No. 2 through No. 6 singles to end the team match before it ever reached the doubles round. Pedro Campos, Ales Modry and Jake Barnard were all two-time winners on the day, winning in both singles and doubles. Barard may have been the most impressive, easily winning his No. 4 singles match 6-3, 6-1 over Colby Trinh before teaming with Sina Sharifi for an 8-3 win at doubles.
Saddleback improved to 8-4 overall and 3-0 in Orange Empire Conference play with the win. The Gauchos will play again at home on Thursday against Riverside City College. Both teams were undefeated in OEC play headed into Tuesday night’s matches. Match time is set for 2:00 PM.

2/29/12: Men’s tennis back on the winning track
After a handful of setbacks against some of the top teams in Southern California, the Saddleback men’s tennis team is back in the win column after a victory on Tuesday. The Gauchos opened Orange Empire Conference play with a 6-3 win over Orange Coast College to improve to 6-4 on the season.
Saddleback had a rough stretch where they lost four straight matches against Mt. San Jacinto, Ventura, Los Angeles Pierce and College of the Desert…four of the top programs in the state. They showed up on Tuesday with a sense of purpose, opening up a 4-2 lead after singles play in beating the Pirates to open conference play with a win.
No. 1 singles player Ales Modry and No. 2 Gage Gallagher along with No. 5 singles player Jake Barnard all won twice on the day, with Gallagher and Barnard teaming up to win at No. 3 doubles. 2/15/12: Men’s tennis off to best start since 2000
The Saddleback men’s tennis team is off to its best start in 12 years, and the trend continued on Tuesday when they traveled to Grossmont College to take on the Griffins. The Gauchos won 5-of-6 singles matches en route to beating Grossmont 8-1.
Saddleback made quick work of Grossmont on Tuesday, rolling past the Griffins for the first 5-0 start to the season since 2000. The Gauchos were dominant in the first five singles matches, winning 60-of-77 games in winning the team match before it ever hit doubles play. The Gauchos went on to win all three doubles matches as well, taking 36-of-49 games.
Ales Modry, Sina Sharifi, Jake Barnard, Chris Bloom and Donnie Howren were all two-time winners on the day. The most impressive may have been Modry, who easily defeated Emmanuel Covera 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles before teaming with Barnard at No. 2 doubles for a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
The 5-0 start is the best start for the program since it started 9-0 back in 2000. Both the 2001 and 2002 teams had tremendous records for the season, but both had early losses to NCAA D1 programs as the 2001 squad lost to Hawaii-Pacific in the early part of the season and the 2002 team lost to UC Irvine.

2/12/12: Gaucho men’s tennis wins again
The men’s tennis team is off to its best start in years, and improved to 4-0 for the season on Friday. The Gauchos defeated Cerritos College 7-2 on the road and closed out the match before it ever reached doubles play.
Saddleback has a young team on the courts this season, but displayed some veteran character on Friday against the Falcons. The Gauchos were pressed to a third and final set in three of six singles matches, and won all three. In a race to ten points, Sina Sharifi, Jake Barnard and Chris Bloom all won their singles matches in the third set, closing out Cerritos heading into doubles play.
The lone two-time winners on the day were Gage Gallagher (pictured left) and Sharifi, who both won at singles before teaming to beat the No. 3 doubles team for Cerritos, 8-2.

The men’s tennis team is off to a 3-0 start to the season after defeating Glendale College 5-4 on Thursday at Nellie Gail Ranch. The Gauchos won 4-of-6 singles matches en route defeating the Vaqueros, led by Chris Bloom.
Saddleback had its toughest challenge of the season so far on Thursday and were pushed to the limit by a talented Glendale team. Bloom (pictured left) was the only two-time winner on the day for the Gauchos, beating Rick Luynian 6-4, 6-4 before teaming with Donnie Howren for an 8-3 win in doubles play. Bloom is undefeated on the season in both singles and doubles play.
Ales Modry, Gage Gallagher, Jake Barnard and Bloom were all victorious in singles play, setting the stage for the third straight win of the season. Modry (pictured right) was likely the most impressive on the day for Saddleback at No. 2 singles, cruising to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Grayson Frazier.
