Head Coach BJ McNICOL (1st season)
BJ McNicol takes over as head coach of the Saddleback women’s soccer program in 2012, replacing Brandee Craig who had been the head coach from the program’s inception in 2001 through the 2011 season (11 years). McNicol has a wealth of experience as a player and coach and is well-known and well-respected for his coaching in Southern California.
He is a product of Viewmont HS in Bountiful, Utah, before continuing his soccer career at UNLV where he played for four years and served as the Runnin’ Rebels’ captain during his senior season. He went on to play professionally for five seasons in the United Soccer League (USL) with the Utah Blitzz and the New Hampshire Phantoms.
He has served as the Director of Coaching for a competitive youth club in Mission Viejo since 2005 and has been coaching at Rosary HS in Fullerton since 2008. For the past two seasons he has served as an assistant coach at Santa Ana College.
Coach McNicol earned a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from UNLV and added a master’s degree in coaching and athletic administration from Concordia University. He currently makes his home in Riverside with his wife, Kelly.
Assistant Coach Lindsay Steinriede (2nd season)
Lindsay Steinriede has been with the soccer program as an assistant for two seasons. She is also the head coach for the Saddleback surf team and is a world class surfer in her own right.
She is a product of nearby Dana Hills HS where she was named as the 2002-2003 South Coast League Athlete of the Year for her success in volleyball, soccer, track, and surfing. She went on to play soccer at UC Santa Barbara, helping the Gauchos win their first Big West title. She transferred to San Diego State after two years, earning her bachelor's degree in Kinesiology. She later earned her master's degree in physical education from the University of South Florida.
Steinriede won the ASP Women's Longboard World Title in 2011 following championship events in France and China. She also teaches classes in yoga, pilates, and surfing at Saddleback.
Assistant Coach Sean Melendez (1st season)
Sean Melendez is in his first season as an assistant coach at Saddleback during the 2012 season. A product of Servite HS in Anaheim, Melendez went on to play college soccer at Sacramento State where he was an all-conference selection, his team’s captain for two seasons, and established new school records for most games started and most minutes played.
He went on to play professionally with several teams, including the Long Island Rough Riders, the California Gold, and alongside Saddleback head coach BJ McNicol with the Utah Blitzz.
Melendez started his coaching career as the head coach at Christian Brothers HS in Sacramento and is the current head coach at Rosary HS in Fullerton. He is also a coach and the Director of Coaching for girls soccer with the Mission Viejo Soccer Club. He makes his home in Orange.
