Athletic Administration
Tony Lipold
Athletic Director/Dean of Kinesiology and Physical Education
Saddleback College has a rich tradition of excellence both in the classroom and on the competitive field. We are striving to continue that tradition as we close in on our 40th anniversary.
"I want to thank you for taking the time to visit our website. I believe we have one of the most attractive campuses in the entire California community college system and a few pictures on our website will never be able to do it justice. We'd like to invite you to visit our campus, take a tour, meet some of our staff members, and see what South Orange County has to offer. The beautiful beaches, the picturesque foothills, and our campus located just a couple of miles away from both."
"Don't think of Saddleback as one of your last options. Think of it as your first option and an opportunity to develop friendships, good academic skills, competitive athletic skills, and a springboard to use to send you on your way to a four-year college and a bachelor's degree."
"The Mission Football Conference is often recognized as the top football conference in the state and the Orange Empire Conference (which governs our other 18 sports) is recognized as the top conference in the nation in some sports. You'll see some of the very best competition and you'll be pushed to become the very best student and athlete you could possibly be."
"We're here for you. We want to see you succeed."
"Come join the Gaucho family!"
Jerry Hannula
Asst. Athletic Director / Sports Information Director
Jerry was hired by Saddleback in August of 1991 as the college’s full-time Sports Information Director. Originally working out of the Office of Marketing and Development, he was responsible for all of the publicity for the athletic programs. Those duties have expanded over the years and he was promoted to Assistant Athletic Director in May of 2005. Although he is still responsible for all of the publicity, statistics, and historical information for the athletic programs, he also handles eligibility and compliance, scholarship, game management, and assists with fundraising and special projects.
Jerry earned a bachelor’s degree in Sports Information from USC in 1987 and added a master’s degree in Kinesiology/Sports Management from Long Beach State in 2003. He has been working in community college athletics since 1987 with previous positions at El Camino and Cuesta colleges. He has served as the president of the California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA), has received several awards for excellence in writing from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), and serves on several committees of the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA).
Maggie Cheng
Senior Administrative Assistant, Kinesiology
Maggie was hired to work in the district’s Public Information office in 1991 where she spent seven years before transferring to the college’s Social and Behavioral Sciences Division. She spent six more years in the Health Sciences office before joining the Physical Education and Athletics Division in the summer of 2005. She is the Senior Administrative Assistant to the Dean/Athletic Director and is responsible for everything related to Physical Education, including the class schedule, curriculum, human resources, and payroll.
She has a bachelor’s degree in Spanish Literature from San Francisco State University and enjoys gardening, cooking, and traveling with her husband, Ben. They have two adult children, Chris and Allison.
Jess Perez
Administrative Assistant, Athletics
Jess was hired to Saddleback College in November 2000 and joined the Athletics Gaucho family in 2004. He is an integral part of the nuts and bolts operation of the Kinesiology & Athletics Division and he has greatly contributed to its success and accomplishments. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Kinesiology & Athletics and is greatly depended upon for his skills, know- how and a “get’er done attitude”. Jess’ main duties and responsibilities include managing the entire budget for the Kinesiology & Athletics Division, providing vital administrative support to the Dean of KNES & Athletics as well as to the faculty, coaches, staff and students alike. He is also one of the few volunteer committee members of the Annual Athletics Golf Tournament Fundraiser in which he helps to plan, direct and operate each year.
