About the Program

The Seamanship Certificate, the Marine Science Technology Seamanship Certificate Program is designed to prepare individuals as crew and operators of ocean going vessels, and technicians to assist scientist and engineers and research personnel, both aboard ship and ashore. It may also prepare students for Coast Guard licensing examinations and to train marine science technicians in the seagoing disciplines of sailing, boating safety, Vessel Command and Organization, navigation, weather, and Marlinspike Seamanship. Fieldwork is conducted throughout Southern California and the Channel Islands on seagoing vessels.

Seamanship Certificate Program

This program is designed to prepare individuals as boat operators and to take Coast Guard licensing examinations as well as to train marine technicians in the seagoing disciplines. Fieldwork is conducted throughout Southern California and the Channel Islands from Dana Point and Newport Harbors. Boats include 28 to 48 ft. sailing and power vessels as well as safety sail training and introductory boating experience on Saddleback's fleet of 14 foot Capri sailboats.

Associate Degree

Associate in Science Degree

Completion of the certificate program and a minimum of 60 units including the general education requirements with an overall GPA of 2.0 qualifies the student for the Associate in Science degree. A minimum of 12 units must be completed at Saddleback College.

Associate in Arts Degree

Complete a minimum of 60 units including the total number of units described above and the General Education requirements with an overall GPA of 2.0 to qualify for the Associate in Arts degree. A minimum of 12 units must be completed at Saddleback College.

General Education Requirements for Associate Degrees

Refer to the Graduation Requirements or to the CSU-GE and IGETC patterns in the catalog for specific courses which meet general education requirements. Refer to ASSIST.org and to the transfer institution's catalog for transfer requirements.

Suggested coursework not required for the major: ET 101; DR 100, PHYS 2A.
