The Saddleback College Symphony Orchestra presents the winners of the 2009 concerto competition in concert. Featured performers are Umi Garret on piano, she most recently appeared on the ELLEN show; Soprano Tiffany Choe, singing arias from Romeo & Juliet and Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro; and Cellist Cynthia Tsai, performing Lalo’s Cello Concerto in D Minor.

Saddleback and Irvine Valley College faculty members perform a concert of original compositions on Thursday, March 25th at 8pm in the McKinney Theatre.  Pieces include a world premiere of a set of songs for trombone and soprano by Jazz Studies Saddleback faculty member Joey Sellers.  Another world premiere of a string quartet composed by Saddleback College Music faculty member Norman Weston will be performed.  Other original works are featured by Saddleback faculty Scott Farthing, John Marr and Randy Rusk as well as works by Daniel Luzko from Irvine Valley College.

PUCCINI’S OPERA SUOR ANGELICA

Under the direction of Dr. Scott Farthing, members of Saddleback College’s Vocal Department will perform a concert version of Puccini’s opera “Suor Angelica.”  From his trio of one act operas II Trittico, Suor Angelica tells the story of Sister Angelica and the nuns of a convent near Siena.

Guest artist Bob Sheppard performs with the Saddleback Lab Ensemble.  An international jazz artist, Sheppard is also in high demand in Los Angeles for session work and has recorded more than 100 television and movie soundtracks.  He is currently a member of The Peter Erskine Trio and has also toured with Chick Corea’s Origin and is featured on Chick Corea’s Grammy nominated CD, Change.
