Important Notice to Students, Parents, or Guardians of Students/Minors

Saddleback College enrolls a large number of High School and K-8 Students through our Special Admission Program for K-12 Students. It is very important to understand that when a minor (or adult) becomes a student at any college, all rights afforded to parents under FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) transfer to the student.  In essence, parents or guardians do not have the right to inspect a student’s records or gain access to information related to their attendance at Saddleback College.

At Saddleback College, any student may access their college records on-line via MySite.  In that way, students have the ability to share enrollment or grade information with their parents/guardians.

It is our policy that all students act on their own behalf. Persons, other than the student, including parents and guardians, are not permitted to enroll, add/drop classes, request transcripts, submit forms or records on behalf of the student.

Minor students and their parents/guardians must also understand that they are entering a college environment, which is designed with adults in mind. Therefore, the atmosphere of the campus in general, and of the classrooms in particular, will frequently reflect an adult population.

Students should be aware that:

  • Courses may have frank discussions about sensitive topics.
  • Audio-visual presentations may be graphic in their content.
  • Students may be exposed to vulgar language outside of the classroom.
  • Instructors cannot sit with underage students while they wait for their ride.

This information serves only as a precaution to allow students and their parents/guardians to understand what a college setting is like so that they can have a safe, positive educational experience at Saddleback College.

Students wishing to send their grades for Saddleback classes to the high school need to order an official transcript.  Information regarding how to order a transcript may be found on the Admissions & Records Transcripts Page.

Q: Do I have access to my son or daughter's academic records?

A: Under Section 49061 of the Education Code, parents/guardians of community college students do not have a right to access their children's student records, regardless of whether the student is under the age of 18. At Saddleback College, any student may access their college records on-line via MySite. In that way, students have the ability to share enrollment or grade information with their parents/guardians.

Q: I need help logging in to, navigating, and/or processing transactions in my student's MySite account. How can I obtain help?

A: College officials may only assist the student with access to his/her MySite account, which contains records covered under FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act). Additionally, students at Saddleback College are required to act on their own behalf. Parents, guardians, relatives, or friends of Saddleback College students are not permitted to enroll, drop, or add classes on behalf of the student.

Q: May I contact my son's/daughter's instructor regarding assignments and/or grading policy?

A: Your student is enrolled in a college course and it is important to understand that instructors may only work directly with students, as opposed to the type of parent/guardian interactions you are accustomed to at the high school level. Under FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) regulations, instructors are not required to discuss student performance or other student-related issues with parents/guardians.

Q: May I request a grade progress report from my son's/daughter's instructor?

A: Under FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) instructors are not required to discuss student performance or other student-related issues with parents/guardians, including progress or grades.
